Course Description

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a national-level entrance examination in India for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and other allied health sciences courses in approved/recognized medical/dental colleges across the country.

  1. Exam Conducting Body:

    • The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts NEET on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
  2. Eligibility Criteria:

    • Candidates must have completed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
    • Minimum qualifying marks in the qualifying examination are required (as per eligibility criteria set by the NTA).
    • Candidates must fulfill age criteria and other eligibility conditions specified by the NTA.
  3. Exam Frequency:

    • NEET is typically conducted once a year, usually in the month of May.
  4. Syllabus:

    • The NEET syllabus is based on the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) curriculum for classes 11 and 12, covering topics in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology.
    • The syllabus includes topics such as Cell Structure and Function, Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution, Biology and Human Welfare, Plant Physiology, Diversity in Living Organisms, etc., in Biology; and topics such as Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc., in Physics and Chemistry.
  5. Exam Pattern:

    • NEET consists of a single paper with 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
    • The paper is divided into three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
    • Each section consists of 45 questions, totaling 180 questions.
    • The duration of the exam is 3 hours.
    • Each question carries 4 marks, and there is a negative marking of 1 mark for incorrect answers.
  6. Admission Process:

    • NEET scores are used by various government and private medical colleges across India for admission to undergraduate medical/dental courses.
    • After the declaration of results, candidates participate in counseling conducted by various authorities (such as MCC, state counseling bodies, etc.) for seat allocation and admission to colleges.
  7. Preparation:

    • Preparation for NEET typically involves thorough study and revision of concepts from classes 11 and 12 syllabi, with an emphasis on understanding and application of principles in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
    • Many students enroll in coaching institutes or self-study using reference books, study materials, and online resources to prepare for NEET. Solving previous years' question papers and taking mock tests are essential strategies to familiarize oneself with the exam pattern and improve time management skills.
